Study in Japan: The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation Scholarship for International Students in Japan, 2018

The new Ichiro Kanehara Foundation Scholarship is now available for foreign students in Japan for the year 2018. The scholarship is awarded to International graduate students, postdoctoral fellow or researchers who are /will be conducting a basic medical research in Japan at least 3 consecutive years including the academic year from April 2018 to March 2019.
Its purpose is to promote academic research and to contribute to improvement in basic medical sciences and medical care. These aims are to be attained by the following scholarship programs.

 In December 1986, in accordance with the wishes of Igaku-Shoin Ltd. in memory of the late Mr. Ichiro Kanehara, The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation for the Promotion of Medical Sciences and Medical Care was established. Its purpose is to nurture talent and to provide financial assistance towards research in basic medical sciences and medical care.

The President’s Ph.D. Scholarships aims to provide up to 50 research students with great potential the opportunity to work within their chosen research field with the support of an excellent supervisor. Opportunities for Ph.D. funding via this scheme are extremely competitive, with higher than usual eligibility requirements.

Eligibility:
Applications are accepted from talented candidates from Imperial College London, the UK and worldwide. There are no restrictions on nationality.
Candidates must be among the highest achievers in their undergraduate cohort, and in receipt of, or due to receive a first class UK degree or equivalent.
Candidates with a standalone Master’s qualification must have achieved a distinction or, where this has yet to have been achieved, be able to provide evidence of high performance that will lead to a distinction. They must also hold a first class UK undergraduate degree or equivalent (integrated Masters that form part of an undergraduate degree, e.g. MEng, MSci, M.Math, are assessed by Admissions as an undergraduate qualification when determining eligibility). Candidates with multiple standalone Master’s qualifications must have achieved a distinction in the one most relevant to their PhD study.

Candidates with degrees from overseas institutions are strongly urged to determine if their scores/grades are equivalent to the relevant eligibility criteria.
Prior to applying candidates must have made contact with a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London who has agreed to supervise their research project. There is not a specific scholarship application form. You should submit your application for admission to study at Imperial through our online admissions system and your department will put you forward for the scholarship based on academic merit and potential.
When prompted for a personal statement you must ensure that it consists of approx. 1000 words (maximum 2 pages) and outlines your academic and research achievements to date, explaining in brief your planned research project. The selection panel will not consider statements exceeding the 2-page limit. You may submit updated versions of this statement if required following application submission.

Scholarship Description
The IPOET (International Programme Office for Education and Training) Scholarships are 75% tuition fee waivers funded by the Government of Sweden.
They are funded by the Swedish Council for Higher Education, but are administered and awarded by Chalmers University of Technology (or simply, Chalmers) to prospective fee-paying students.
For the academic year 2018, Chalmers will award about 50 of these scholarships to eligible applicants.

Selection Criteria :

No funds are transferred to the scholarship laureates.

Method of Application
You are required to fill in the online scholarship application form. However, it is obligatory to submit an application for Chalmers' Master's Programmes at University Admissions prior to making a scholarship application .
It is only after you successfully submit an application for a masters programme that you will be able to obtain your individual application number, which must be entered correctly in the scholarship application portal in order for the Scholarship Committee to obtain information about what Master's Programmes you have applied to at Chalmers, etc.

PLEASE NOTE:

In summary, the IPOET scholarship is awarded primarily based on academic merits, with an emphasis on academic excellence.
These scholarships do not cover living expenses in Sweden. They are awarded as a tuition fee reduction, covering 75% of the tuition fee. No grants are transferred to the scholarship laureates as monetary funds.
Students awarded the scholarship still need to prove to the Swedish Migration Board that they are able to provide sufficient funds to cover the remaining tuition fee and living expenses during the whole period of study, in order to be granted a Resident permit for academic studies in Sweden.
